Abstract

This study explores the roles that institutional, community, or personal influences have on African American administrators who are currently employed at Western Interstate Commission for Higher Education (WICHE) state universities and colleges. The role ethnic identity played in the decision to apply for, accept employment, and remain employed at institutions located in communities that have very small African American populations was examined. Assimilation and attachment theories provided the theoretical framework that guided the study. The results reveal that there are several themes generated from the data: job opportunity, city designation (location), support group, community upbringing and ethnic identity, and racial isolation.
