Abstract

This research project is part of an ongoing effort to enhance treatment at Trinity Services, Inc., a private mental health organization serving individuals with developmental disabilities and severe mental illness. A new training for Trinity's direct care staff, Independent Living Counselors (ILCs), was developed. This training involves the basic principles of behavior analysis and Functional Analytic Psychotherapy (FAP). The training was given to ILCs over the course of sixteen weeks and a waitlist-control group design was employed to examine the effects. This training is meant to increase ILC's knowledge of behavioral and FAP principles, improve client outcomes, and enhance the social environment. A replication was attempted by training the control group. The results indicated some modest improvement in treatment outcomes and suggest that additional institutional practices would need to be in place to support improved staff learning and program implementation.
