Geology of the Groom district, Lincoln County, Nevada

Abstract

Field work in the Groom district has looked at the Lower and Middle Cambrian stratigraphy near the Pioche district. An exceptionally thick section of Mountain quartzite forms the west side, measuring over 7,000 feet in thickness. There is no distinct evidence of fault repetition in this section. No diagnostic fossils were found in the Mountain quartzite, but it is the writer's opinion that the formation extends into the Pre-Cambrian. The east side of the range displays excellent exposures of the Pioche, Lyndon, Peasley, Burrows, and Highland Peak formations, with fossil horizons. Volcanics, dominantly andesite, cover sediments in the central portion of the range.
