Abstract

Artificial intelligence (AI) chatbots are increasingly being explored as potential and safe tools for delivering sexual and reproductive health (SRH) information, particularly among adolescents who face cultural, social, and systemic barriers to traditional sexual health services. This study investigates how Nigerian adolescents and young adults perceive Revida, an AI powered SRH information source chatbot, focusing on dimensions of trust, competence, usefulness, effectiveness, social presence, and perceived privacy. The study used a sequential explanatory mixed-methods design with 240 participants (aged 15-25) who completed an online survey following an interaction with a simulated chatbot, and 10 participants participated in semi structured interviews. findings revealed high levels of trust (M = 3.90), competence (M = 3.88), usefulness (M = 3.86), effectiveness (M = 3.91), and privacy (M = 3.67). Complementing that, the interview showed that participants valued Revida's clarity, respectful tone, and ability to simplify complex SRH topics. While participants regard Revida for its convenient and trustworthy first point of access for SRH education, they did not consider it a replacement for professional healthcare. Overall, the findings suggest that empathetic, user-centered, and privacy-assured AI chatbots hold promise as accessible entry points for adolescent SRH engagement in Nigeria.
