Abstract
Two 1/3-scale circular reinforced concrete bridge columns with identical properties were tested on the University of Nevada, Reno (UNR) shake table system. An inertial loading system termed the mass rig was developed to test single-degree-offreedom bridge columns on the shake table. A computer program called RC-SHAKE was developed to calculate the response of specimens subjected to dynamic loading. The columns in this study were 16 inches in diameter and 72 inches in height. Current CALTRANS bridge design details were used in the design of the columns. The columns were scaled models of the prototype column used in a standard-cyclic study performed at NIST7. The test program for the UNR study consisted of two different earthquake loading scenarios to compare the effect of load history on the performance of the two columns. A significant difference in column response was shown due to the two loading scenarios. RC-SHAKE adequately predicted column deflections under earthquake loading. Using the results from the NIST study showed strain rate can have a significant effect on column capacity for dynamic loading versus slow-cyclic testing. Bridge columns designed using current codes were shown to perform well for earthquake loading.
