Abstract

A mass and heat transfer model has been developed for the transfer of a solute between two partially miscible liquids. This model only considers mass diffusion and heat conduction with a heat source due to the heat of solution. The resulting set of four mass and two heat transfer equations were numerically solved using the DSS/2 software package. DSS/2 is a fully developed software package designed especially for the numerical solution of systems of algebraic, ordinary and partial differential equations. This package was implemented in a PDP-11/73 computer. A method was proposed for applying the boundary conditions, which is more general and efficient than those previously mentioned in the literature. The results of the coupled mass diffusion and heat conduction model were compared with available experimental data. The model ge11erated profiles are la all cases lower than the experimental values. The agreement could be improved if a convection mechanism is incorporated into the model.
