Abstract

Statistics show that Hispanic students have a greater high school dropout rate than other common races in the United States. Hispanic adolescents are also more likely to be involved in gangs during high school years. Hispanic high school dropout and adolescent Hispanic gang involvement appear to have common characteristics, but at this time it is uncertain if these two events have similar causes. While much research has been done on these two events individually, the intent of this thesis is to explore connections between the findings on Hispanic high school dropouts and Hispanic adolescent gang involvement presented in literature published since the year 2000. Research for this review is limited to peer-reviewed journal articles, with comparisons made among studies that were conducted before 2000, between 2000 and 2005, and between 2006 and 2011.
