Abstract

Inside the Umber Iris is a poetry collection that uses the surrealist style in order to showcase the subconscious and dissociation caused by a type of generational trauma and violence. Many of these poems take place at the intrapersonal level, often displaying the speaker's struggle with addiction and his surrounding triggers. At the same time, this poetry collection is meant to serve as a larger critique towards machismo. All the people who are mentioned in this collection are prisoners of machismo, whether they are the ones reinforcing its oppressive social dynamics or victims of its phenomenon. Inside the Umber Iris is meant to be a call towards all the Latine community: in order to stop this type of generational trauma and violence it needs to be discussed openly in order to break the cycle.
