Abstract
My art cannot be understood primarily by thinking. My art touches people who are in tune with my mode of thinking. But it is clear that people cannot understand my art by intellectual processes alone, because no art can be experienced in that way. Joseph Beuys, 1969. Given our social, political, economic, cultural, and religious circumstances, I believe that self-existence is a very important matter to focus on. Our soul is dominated each and every moment by these circumstantial ideologies that prevent us from experiencing nature. Our current circumstances are driving us towards aggression, leading us to become overcritical and violent. As a result, we are losing the authentic structure of our soul and mind. In this body of works, I am responding to the psychological impact of “action and reaction. Sir Isaac Newton explained in his third law of motion that for every action, there is an equal and opposite reaction. I like to think of this law in metaphorical terms beyond the literal mathematical implications. I believe that every human being exists in a constant state of action and reaction every being is psychologically reacting to every action around it. I believe through continuously acting and reacting, beings are transferring their emotions to others. Through the process of continual action and reaction, beings are begun to lose meaning and importance through repetition. As meaning is lost, a void is created. As a result of thinking this way about the void, I started to believe that I am reduced to nothing; I am simply the reflection of my surroundings. Others' actions and reactions are developing my knowledge, my thinking and my understanding. As a result, others build me as a unique experienced being with a unique personality. Here golden and silver represents the fundamental presence of I and other Gold and silver associated with reflective soul, natural minerals, history of hierarchy, body, connection and communications. I am influenced and inspired by artist Joseph Beuys to offer a journey for my viewers That way we may start thinking about our authentic existence, creative soul, and our connections with the system of nature. My desire in art is to re-connect to the authenticity that exists in nature, and to remind us of our core instincts. -Mahedi Anjuman
