Abstract
As the aging population continues to grow worldwide, the prevalence of physical and cognitive impairments (for example, chronic conditions) is rising. The trajectory of cognitive decline varies widely due to factors such as genetics, physiological changes, as well as environmental and behavioral factors. This fact increases the importance of reliable diagnostic techniques, widespread education, and reflective early intervention. Without any known diseasealtering treatments, non-pharmacologic therapeutic approaches such as modifying unhealthy lifestyle factors should be promoted through specific public health campaigns. This should be done to reduce the prevalence and burden of cognitive impairments. The goal of this thesis is to emphasize prevention as a key element to counteract the epidemic of cognitive impairment and consider ways that public health surveillance can facilitate this process.
