Abstract
The United States’ diplomatic relationship with Russia has significantly deteriorated over the last decade, and Russia’s foreign policy actions have been increasingly unpredictable. As a result, Washington D.C. and the Kremlin have grown progressively distrustful of each other. However, there exists a method to predict future actions of another nation and their implications through the quantification of the nations’ preferences: game theory. By applying game theoretic models to the scenarios of US and Russian interaction in the Crimean Crisis of 2014 and the current Syrian Civil War, this thesis will provide an analysis of strategies in which the US’ and Russia’s interests align, and therefore allow for concurrence between the two nations. The results will provide an important conjectural perspective to the US policy making process in dealing with Russia, and the examination of areas of shared interest between the United States and Russia will identify opportunity for cooperation.
