Abstract

Although water levels in both confined and unconfined aquifers fluctuate as a result of several natural forces, unconfined aquifer response has seldom been addressed in much detail. Periodic fluctuations observed in wells tapping a shallow, unconfined aquifer in Owens Valley, California are thought to be due to the aquifer’s response to barometric pressure, evapotranspiration, and temperature. Actual and stochastically generated water level data are examined to determine whether the removal of these forces results in a significant change in the aquifer's calculable hydrologic properties.
