Abstract
Macronutrient intake has changed over the past decade, increasing carbohydrate intake and overall caloric intake, likely due to an increased availability of processed and energy dense convenience food options. There are many theories on what influences dietary choice in humans and even more speculation on what drives obesity, such as genetics, diet, stress, medications, and recently the microbiome, and there is even more interest in how obesity can be prevented. Dietary choice is a known factor that is related to obesity and is thought to be related to and influenced by several factors that may be outside of the control of the host. More research has been explored with this topic with specific regard for protein intake, including the protein leverage hypothesis, suggesting that protein intake may influence mammalian intake. The influence of diet on the microbiome has been shown, however, there is new interest on if the microbiome can influence dietary intake and thus drive or prevent obesity. This review summarizes the available research on how food choice influences the microbiome, how macronutrient intake is related to the gut microbiome, the microbiomes influence on dietary intake, and the possible connection between the gut microbiome and macronutrient intake.
