Abstract
The historical development and recent applications of pneumatic transport in the underground mining industry are researched and summarized. Systems for transporting rock material ranging from minus 6 mm to minus 100 mm are described. It is shown how the system, originally designed for the transport of coal and soft rock, has been modified to accommodate hard, abrasive rock, giving it a broader range of possible applications. Backfilling and hoisting systems are described. A new method for system design calculations is introduced. It is based on calculation methods of 26 23 A .J. Chambers and R.D. Marcus and N. Brook. A computer program in the language of MS BASIC uses the new method to estimate the optimum pipe diameter, free air requirement and pressure drop for given atmospheric conditions, required mass throughput, material density and pipeline configuration. The motor power requirement is calculated using the estimated compressor capacities of free air requirement and pressure drop in the equation for isothermal compression. The user can modify the input variables to calculate these parameters for an overdesigned system.
