Abstract
An alternative electrochemical process for the production of lead-calcium alloys used in battery and electrowinning anodes was developed. Other methods for the production of the alloy, Pb3Ca, are costly, complex, and inefficient. The method entailed an electrowinning step. Calcium chloride was fed to the electrowinning cell with a potassium chloride-calcium chloride molten-salt eutectic electrolyte. The calcium was electrowon at 650 degrees Celsius into a molten lead cathode to 6.1 weight percent calcium with 94 percent current efficiency.
