Abstract

Short term experiments lasting for thirty minutes on dissolution of amosite and crocidolite gave congruent dissolution. The rate of dissolution was found to depend on pH, surface area and stirring rate. The kinetics of reaction between water and ground minerals (amosite and crocidolite was investigated over a temperature range of 5-45 C in an unstirred reactor. The studies indicated that solution diffusion in the surface layer was the rate controlling step during the early stages of leaching. The activation energies were calculated for the dissolution of magnesium, iron and silicon in crocidolite and amosite with respect to change in pH with temperature. In addition, carbon dioxide was passed through some of the mineral suspensions. These experiments indicated that C02 reacted with the ionic species in the suspension, resulting in the release of hydrogen ions. Amount of dissolved carbon dioxide decreased with increasing temperature. Carbon dioxide saturated solutions of these minerals were found unstable with respect to pH.
