Abstract
Material strength characterization is the first step to exploring the material usage before itsstructural applications. Since most of the structures are designed for the loads like vehicle loads, impacts, earthquakes, and wind, the structural member should be ductile, strong, and sustainable for long use. The tensile property of the material directly enhances the ductility of the whole structure and can be used for optimum lifespan under repetitive loadings. Generally, conventional concrete made of cement, sand, and aggregates have better compressive behavior and very low tensile strength. Recent studies have suggested that poly methyl methacrylate (PMMA) polymer has very high tensile and bonding properties. Furthermore, it can be mixed with sand and aggregates to form polymer concrete which has high compressive and tensile strength suitable for infrastructure applications. This study investigates the tensile property of this polymer concrete and shows higher tensile strength compared to normal concrete. PMMA-PC was tested with seven different strain rates ranging from 1E-4/s to 1E1/s under monotonic loading for dog bone and straight samples. The tensile strength for the PMMA-PC was found to be rate-dependent and has more than double the tensile strength of conventional concrete and can be used for infrastructure applications.
