Abstract
This study presents an investigation on geology and geochemistry of the Sterling gold deposit in southern Nye County, Nevada. Regional and district geology and a representative mine study area was investigated. Paleozoic sediments around the mine have been deformed by thrusting, wrench and normal faulting. Intermediate volcanic flows and tufts cover large areas north and east of Bare Mountain. Micron sized gold mineralization at Sterling occurs in meta- siltstones of the Cambrian Wood Canyon Formation. Thrusting moved silicic sediments of the Wood Canyon over Cambrian Bonanza King Dolomite. Mineralization is concentrated in upper elate sediments where high angle faults intersect the thrust plane. Mineralization occurred at shallow levels under conditions of high Eh and variable pH.
