Abstract

My art practice is intuitive, compulsive, and physical. The force of spontaneity is the foreground, infinite variation is the framework, and direct action is my mode of operation. I am interested in the effects of being confronted by the strangely familiar. My work begins with familiar objects or ideas which become guides or points of departure, wherein, action, gesture, and presence direct specific physical processes of action and response, or trauma and recovery, to arrive at a level of figurative abstraction that explores the contrast between the recognizable and the unique to play upon the strangely familiar. Through process based figurative abstraction, I explore complex interactions between the familiar and the unique to arrive at objects engaged in reflection, contemplation, and the arousing of relative truths. In my physical discourse of pure action and the manipulation of the human form, I am not looking specifically to make a distorted body; rather, I am working through action and gesture to find connections to the body which I can push to the limits of an almost narrative. In this, the contrast between the known and the unknown and the process of abstraction serves the exploration of relationships on many levels to communicate issues in the human experience like longing, desire, and intimacy.
