Abstract
Intradialytic hypotension (IDH) is a frequent complication in hemodialysis (HD) patients that can be deadly. IDH is typically defined as a drop in blood pressure during HD treatment that may be associated with symptoms or need for an intervention. The etiology and pathophysiology of IDH is multifactorial and complex, respectively, and while effective treatments are available, they have notable drawbacks. This emphasizes the importance of strategies to prevent IDH rather than relying on acute treatment methods to manage blood pressure variability. This thesis reviews the current understanding of IDH and its etiologies, risk factors, definitions, and treatment options. A retrospective chart review was done in 44 patients to compare the different definitions of IDH to each other and how they relate to various risk factors. A novel definition of IDH was created for this study that was able to effectively categorize cases based on the severity of the drop in blood pressure. This definition helped describe the wide variability of IDH cases in this population, which may have potential for use in clinical and research applications.
