Abstract
Adoption enables children to experience permanence and stability through an adoptive family. Every child and adoptive family possess strengths and limitations that can lead to family stability or instability. Adopted children often have needs that exceed the family’s capability to manage and require services after adoption. Needs left unattended can lead to adoption disruption or dissolution, which sadly ends an adoption. Disruption can be prevented by postadoptive services, which are designed to meet the needs of the child and family and increase family stability. This study examines which post-adoptive services are available, accessible, and beneficial to adoptive families who have adopted a child with special needs or are in the process of adopting a child through Washoe County. A descriptive survey design was used with sixty participants who adopted special-needs children and eight participants who are in the process of adopting a child through Washoe County. Results were analyzed with descriptive and frequency statistics. In conclusion, adoptive families in Washoe County need and desire more post-adoptive services.
