Abstract
Terthiophene compounds are naturally occurring in marigolds and can be used as photosensitizing agents in photodynamic therapy. As of now, photodynamic therapy is limited by its use of light that can only penetrate shallow tissues. Synthesis of pyridineterthiophene-based compounds has been studied due to its increased conjugation leading to longer wavelengths. Using low frequency infrared light , up to five inches of tissue can be penetrated. This would be a breakthrough to the field of photochemistry and make photodynamic therapy more widely available for use. This report summarizes the synthesis of pyridinethiophene-based compounds with fluorescence potential application in photodynamic therapy.
