Abstract
The following research examines the seismic behavior of bridges designed according to a new design configuration with reduced number of frames, equal column heights within frames, and hinges without hinge seats. Behavior of the new bridges is compared to bridges designed by conventional means. Properties of bridges were modeled after the south connector of the Interstate 5 / State Route 14 interchange in Southern California.
Eight bridges were studied in this project. Four bridge geometries were considered; straight with no skew, thirty degree skew, sixty degree skew, and curved with no skew. Each configuration was designed by both new and conventional methodologies.
Three additional studies were also conducted. The first was aimed at assessing seismic behavior of new bridge configurations fitted with conventional hinge features. Frame end modeling techniques were investigated in the second. Finally, the third study examined the effectiveness of simple lateral load analysis of selected bridge structures (Abstract by authors).
