Abstract

Tobacco use causes immediate and long-term damage. According to the Surgeon General, prolonged tobacco use leads to the development of different cancers and chronic diseases. Using the Nevada Department of Taxation's cigarette retailers list, the U.S. Governments Census Data, and other databases, this study will explain the prevalence and distribution of tobacco products within a wide range of Northern Nevada strata through a GIS map and subsequent SAS analysis. The hypothesis tests whether the availability of and accessibility to tobacco products within the Washoe County community leads to increased risk of diseases. Results indicate an unequal distribution of greater contact with tobacco products in lower income neighborhoods and a greater risk of different diseases. Future research could include e-cigarettes, their retailers and proper analysis of the risks they pose to the environment as well as the proximity of tobacco to schools and parks.
