Abstract

In behavior analysis the necessity of practicing a skill at optimal frequencies has been questioned due to the use of flawed methodologies. The current study attempted to identify the necessity of teaching learners to respond at optimal frequencies in the production of RESAA through the use of free-operant procedures. An A/B multiple probe design was used with frequency-building and practice-only conditions that were yoked for practice and reinforcement across participants. Participants were trained to engage in an arbitrary symbol-sound association task and tested to assess application, stability, and retention. Results indicated that practice produced an increase in frequencies to optimal levels for both conditions. Similarly, RESAA was achieved across all participants, demonstrating the importance of free-operant procedures and standard measurement practices in the design of research methodologies.
