Abstract
A novel of compressible magnetorheological fluid (CMRF) has been synthesized from modified silicone oil, composite polyurethane-microspheres additives, and surface coated iron particles. The CMRF has been designed to replace the spring in a damper system. Thus, the fluid has to provide an elastic properties in the system which can be controlled by applying a magnetic field. The fluid compressibility has been characterized by force-displacement measurements. The addition of composite polyurethane-microspheres increases the strength and compressibility of the fluid. It also decreases the concentration of iron particles needed in order to achieve the same yield stress as commercially available MR fluid. Compressible MR fluid developed utilizing composite microspheres/polyurethane also shows promising results in OEM damper testing. The settling problem of the iron particles can be minimized by coating the surface of the iron particles with poly(2,3,4,5,6-pentafluorostyrene) via reversible addition fragmentation chain transfer (RAFT). A new method for the surface modification of iron particles gives a more uniform coating of the iron particles.The compressible MR fluids prepared using the techniques developed in this research provide better performance, better stability and lower cost of production.
