Abstract

A study was conducted concerning the feasibility of using a bubble-cap tray column for the continuous leaching of a zinc concentrate with chlorine. A 15.2 cm by 152.4 cm plexiglass column with five bubble-cap trays was used in the investigation as the metallurgical reactor. Zinc, lead and copper extractions of up to 54, 63 and 46 percent, respectively, were obtained. Extraction of the metal values was found to be dependent on chlorine and feed flowrates and independent of temperatures. A recycle test with a recycle ratio of 4:1 was conducted. The recycle increased the extraction of zinc, lead and copper to 68, 93 and 66 percent, respectively. The mechanisms involved in the reactions between the metal sulfides and chlorine in aqueous solutions were found to proceed via formation of sulfur monochloride with the rate limiting step being the transfer of chlorine to the solid surface.
