Abstract
Behavior-Based Safety (BBS) has been remarkably successful at decreasing injuries and fatalities in organizational settings. Direct, behavioral observations are one cornerstone of effective BBS programs. This study examined the effects of providing managerial-level, weekly feedback to front-line employees about the employees' BBS observations in a Midwestern oil refinery. Results suggest that carefully interlocking the behavior of front-line employees with managerial practices can enhance effective BBS programs. Contextual features that may bolster or mitigate the effects of such systems are described and future directions are discussed in the context of slowly improving a world-class system.
