Abstract

This report describes the experimental and analytical investigation of one-way reinforced concrete bridge column hinges when subjected to axial compression and direct shear in the weak duection. The shear capacity and failure mechanism of one-way hinges in the weak direction was measured and compared to the current design procedure. A survey was conducted to identify an average hinge detail. This average detail matched the Rose Creek Bridge, which is located in Nevada. Three identical 5116-scale specimens that represented the Rose Creek Bridge were constructed and tested. Flexural analysis was performed on the first specimen using a section analysis program called RCMC. The shear analysis that was performed on the last two specimem was based on the behavior and strengths of the materials used in the one-way hinges A new approach was developed for predicting the shear strength and mode of failure of one-way hinges in the weak direction.
