Abstract
The Quilmana porphyry copper prospect, located in the Andean Cordillera of Central Peru, is related to a (?) Lower to Middle Tertiary diorite-andesite-dacite stock, at the northern end of the Tiabaya super unit. Hydrothermal alteration and mineralization are found on the stock, in and around a crackle-hydrothermal breccia body, and are represented by a feldspar-destructive alteration which grades outward to propylitic alteration. The feldspar-destructive alteration is largely of the sericitic type with irregular patches of silicification, and with pyrite as the most common sulfide present. Supergene alteration is little developed, and only an irregular, mainly jarositic leached capping characterizes the present surface at the Quilmana prospect. In the light of the present study, the Quilmana prospect can be classified as a weakly developed portion of a porphyry-type mineralization which does not provide good evidence for an economic porphyry copper deposit to be found downward.
