Abstract

This report presents the results of nonlinear finite element analyses conducted on built-up shear links that will be used in the proposed retrofit of the Richmond San Rafael Towers. The link was designed according to AISC Seismic Provisions for Structural Steel Building. Strain and stress distributions along critical sections of the shear link are presented in this paper. A series of parametric studies on web compactness and stiffener spacing were conducted to study their effect on the plastic rotation of the shear link. Based on these analyses, an equation that relate the plastic rotation to the web compactness and stiffener spacing is recommended.
