Abstract
Cultural environment as well as biological upbringing synthesize together to create unique visual identities. Through creative practice I utilize my cultural background to create and redefine shape and color through painting. My practice aims to critique orientalism and establish communication of ideas through abstract shape, linear form, and color. Drawing inspiration from talisman and script from the Taoist canon and synthesizing that together with Bauhaus principles of design and color creates a creative practice that further establishes Asian-American identity in contemporary art. This practice is founded upon the concept that different elements of visual art communicate different ideas to the viewer, this is established through the development of a lexicon that develops a visual language that communicates abstract ideas to the viewer.
