Abstract

This literature review aims to understand a variety of protocols used in hormone extraction. Hormone extraction from various samples including blood serum, egg yolks, feces, and other biological substances, has been conducted for many years. However there has yet to be a successful protocol that allows researchers to extract testosterone (T) from free living house wren (Troglodytes aedon) egg yolks followed by analyses with enzyme linked immunoassays. The goal of this review is to propose a protocol for Textraction from these yolks that will allow researchers to continue understanding differences in T levels between populations. After review, I propose a method as follows: sample extraction and preparation, solid phase extraction (SPE) followed by liquid-liquid extraction (LLE), and finally an enzyme immunoassay (EIA). This protocol is suggested as an effective method to extract T from free living house wren egg yolks. Further research and investigation are needed to verify this protocol.
