Abstract

There are three types of research questions pursued in the behavior analysis of gambling. These questions concern the structure and the function of the game, and the gaming milieu. Historically, researchers in behavior analysis have focused primarily on research questions related to the function of the game. The current study aims to examine the effects on gambling of auditory stimuli in the gaming milieu. Thirteen undergraduate students participated by playing a slot machine in four separate audio conditions before indicating preference by selecting one auditory milieu to repeat in the Test Phase. Seven participants experienced the auditory milieu that they selected (Matched Play condition), while six participants experienced a different auditory milieu than they selected (Unmatched Play condition). Results indicate that the type of milieu appears to have no consistent effects on preference. There was, however, a notable difference in persistence between the participants in the Matched Play and Unmatched Play conditions. Participants in the Unmatched Play condition played roughly four times longer than those in the Matched Play condition.
