Abstract
This study analyzes pedestrian crashes occurring in four different focus areas in Reno and Sparks, NV (Washoe County) to help reduce fatal and serious injuries. In conjunction with Vision Zero of Northern Nevada, achieving a goal of zero fatalities on Nevada roads is at the forefront of transportation planning. The factors featured in this study include pedestrian and driver actions, lighting, time of day, age and crash severity to gain insights into causation and provide countermeasures and strategies that will help fuel safe pedestrian planning measures in Nevada. ESRI’s ArcGIS was used to conduct the analysis, which provided a visualization of crash locations and various factors contributing to them. Surveys at each focus area are conducted to support planning efforts of public outreach and gain further insights into existing issues and pedestrian needs.
