Abstract

This thesis explores how the election of America's first ever majority-woman state legislature in Nevada's 2018 election affected the substantive representation of women in the ensuing legislative session in 2019. An examination of different states' legislatures' levels of substantive representation of women in their respective 2019 legislative sessions was completed. The data suggests that in having a majority-woman legislature, Nevada did not see an anomalous spike in terms of women's substantive representation. The issue delved into partisan makeups across states, and differences in their legislative processes, some of which are a result of each states' legislature's level of professionalism. This thesis concludes that increased levels of women's descriptive representation in a legislative body does increase women's substantive representation, but nuanced political processes and partisan makeups ultimately affect to what extent.
