Abstract

One of the largest barriers to electric vehicles becoming widely accepted for transportation is cost. While many of the factors contributing to high price in highway legal electric vehicles like batteries and motors are coming down in price, there are other factors that can be improved in both price and performance. Pentateq intends to provide a simple, inexpensive motor controller that will employ regenerative braking for electric vehicles, which is only offered in high-end controllers. Applying fresh and innovative design concepts, a new type of controller can be produced that offers similar performance and increased functionality at a reduced cost. Incorporating a programmable computer and reducing redundancies in the design of the controllers makes the design cost effective and increases functionality. Pentateq is replacing the logic gates with a programmable computer and the transistor array with a power transistor. The industrial power transistor is a single high-capacity transistor that can offer the same current and voltage capacities as an array of transistors in a single device and at a reduced cost. Incorporating regenerative braking in the controller will help reduce strain on an electric vehicle’s battery system, extending battery life and decreasing cost to the user.
