Abstract

The effects of time, temperature, powder blending, and additions of up to 1% ZrH and Ni on the hot-pressed density of electrowon powder were studied. Significant findings were: the large particle size and shape effectively prevented electrowon powder from sintering to a high density by hot-pressing at 4500 psi and 2300°C. Densities in excess of 90$ theoretical were obtained by blending up to 50 weight percent 2.7 micron tungsten powder with electrowon powder. ZrH was found to be a poor activating agent for the hot- pressing technique. Liquid nickel, present in amounts as small as 0.1 weight percent, significantly increased, the densification rate of tungsten compacts.
