Abstract
In this thesis a single-fiber bidirectional Self Healing Ring (SHR) network for Metropolitan Area Networks (MANs) has been proposed. The ring architecture consists of the main Hub and Access nodes (ANs) through which routing takes place. The proposed network is highly reliable and robust with combined functionalities of advanced optical components, HFDL (Hybrid Fiber Delay Line) and an efficient MAC (Medium Access Control) protocol, iCSMA/CD (Intelligent Carrier Sense Multiple Access/Collision Detection). The restoration time achieved in previous designs for a single link failure in the network was 5ms to 9ms. The data up to 0.7Gbps (for 2.5Gbps link) is always lost during the restoration time. The proposed HFDL not only supports the iCSMA/CD protocol for upstream, but also retains data in case of single fiber failure minimizing the restoration time to 1μs. Data lost during this time is reduced to less than 1Kbps. Simulations are performed to evaluate the performance of the ring architecture with HFDL and ICSMACD. The results show that the combination of the HFDL switch and ICSMA has improved the overall throughput performance, reduced congestion in the network and also minimized the data loss in link failure conditions. The cost of the network is reduced to 60% of the previously proposed designs with similar performance. Performance analysis, Capacity requirements, Throughput calculations for different number of nodes under various conditions are analyzed for MANs. Optimization and scalability calculations are also performed for MANs
