Abstract

Traditional education uses Rapid Automatic Naming (RAN) to identify students at risk of developing a deficient reading repertoire. Historically, RAN has been believed to be one of the strongest predictors of reading ability due to its high correlation to an individual’s oral reading speed (ORS). This relationship has been investigated more closely in recent years, and a great deal of variation in the magnitude of the relationship between RAN and ORS has been revealed. The present study was conducted in response to the meta-analysis conducted by Araújo, Reis, Petersson, & Faísca (2015) who examined the variables contributing to the relationship between RAN and ORS. The stimulus density values were varied on RAN assessments, outcomes were then compared to the outcomes of an ORS assessment. Differential responding across participants were seen for the lower stimulus densities, while the higher density values saw moderate differences.
