Abstract
This study examines José Cadalso's Noches lúgubres (Woeful Nights) through research and translation. Research covers Cadalso's life and works, and areas of translation theory and history. The translation, of the work mentioned above, is from Spanish to English, and this study is written entirely in Spanish except for the translation into English. Research on Cadalso's background deals with the influence of the Enlightenment on his work (especially in Cartas marruecas) and, later, the influence of Romanticism (in Noches lúgubres). Research also considers his approach to masculine characterization (his distinction between "hombre de bien" and "petimetre") as propounded by Rebecca Haidt in her Embodying Enlightenment. Research on translation theory and history inlcudes a look at "foreignization" theory of Lawrence Venuti, a theory which I hold to in this particular translation. Other topics of translation history and theory are covered, like the emergence of Translation Studies, "skopos" theory, translatorial action, feminist and post-colonial translation, passive multilingualism, overt and covert translations, creativity and translation, and the multiple responsibilities of the translator. The study closes with a detailed look at a number of key moments from the process of translating Noches lúgubres and the decisions that were made in each case.
