Abstract
Gold is one of the most coveted metals in the world thanks to its unique properties. Gold has been recognized in multiple fields spanning ancient cultures and modern life. A major aim of our current research is to promote gold chemistry and develop useful applications in science and technology. Gold has different chemical states that are frequently overlooked. These offer new areas of exploration in fields such as medicine, catalysis, liquid crystals, and two-dimensional polymers.Liquid crystals find widespread applications in the fabrication of opto- and photo- electronic devices. Our goal is to assess the potential of columnar liquid crystals based on discotic gold(I) pyrazolates decorated with long hydrocarbon chains. These materials show enhanced stability at room temperature over a long period of time. In addition, formation of supramolecular assemblies due to close range aurophilic interactions, van der Waals interactions, and " stacking produces highly processable materials. A transient current was established upon photo- irradiation. Charge carrier mobility by time-of-flight measurements were unsuccessful and we are exploring solutions as well as other techniques.Synthetic two-dimensional polymers are a novel class of polymers with potential applications in gas separation and electronics. We explore the use of gold(I) pyrazolates as building blocks for the design and fabrication of two-dimensional metallic organic frameworks. Although crystal growth and exfoliation of two-dimensional sheets was not attainable, a novel gold(I) pyrazolate gel and two new organometallic trinuclear crystals were obtained.
