Abstract
AbstractInfant mental health, although a growing field, has yet to establish standards for dispositional assessment, remediation, and gatekeeping processes for infant mental health training programs. As the infant mental health profession expands upon and solidifies training protocols, so should dispositional characteristics be identified and incorporated into admissions and gatekeeping in infant mental health certification programs. After an exploration of dispositional literature, grounded theory was used to explore the opinions of infant mental health supervisors, providers, and parents who have been involved in infant mental health services. After open and axial coding was performed on data from interviews, a grounded theory on effective infant mental health provider dispositions was developed with themes of reflective capacity, flexibility, compassion, patience, and openness.
