Abstract
Description
Moving from a wide angle shot of gender theory, Basque Gender Studies focuses on the way Basque women and men live and work together in a modern society steeped in ancient culture. This book explodes the myth of Basque matriarchy and questions the extent of women's rule fixed in a mystical past. The powerful mother figure has a vital role in handing down the Basque language and culture, at home and abroad, but at the same time, women are breaking old molds and carving out new niches for themselves, sometimes coming into head-on collision with the force of tradition. The evolution of the Basque women's movement reflects the radical changes of past decades and sheds light on the present. What was it like to be a woman in Franco's times? How did the women's movement lead a sexual revolution in a Catholic country? What political voice do Basque women have now? Most importantly, are Basque women and men equal today? These and other questions will engage and absorb all those interested in the gender issues which face the Basque Country in the twenty first century.
