Abstract

Practical construction and inspection guidelines for selected NDOT maintenance treatments were developed. Separate documents were developed for NDOT Maintenance and Asset Management Division and Construction Division training purposes. The scope of each includes Chip Seal, Fog Seal, Crack Filling and Patching. The guidelines include material, equipment, construction and inspection sections with references to NDOT Standard Specifications where applicable. The Construction and Inspection Guides incorporate visual aids and practical on-site observations in the form of field construction activity photos. During development of the guidelines, multiple construction site visits to observe each maintenance treatment occurred. Observations were made of maintenance treatments constructed by NDOT Maintenance crews and Licensed Contractors. Additionally, NDOT District Maintenance Managers were interviewed regarding good practices and required resources for applying each maintenance treatment. An analysis of chip seal performance and cost between NDOT Maintenance Division (State Force) and Contractor constructed projects was initiated. The NDOT chip seal project cost comparison is included herein.
