Abstract
Law enforcement officials have traditionally tried to crackdown on drug sales by using different techniques (undercover buys, surveillance, and use of informants). Critics of these tactics have, however, generated some concern that they are not actually addressing the crime problem, but simply displacing it to other locations. This study seeks to examine the displacement effects (if any) associated with a high intensity undercover narcotics crackdown in Reno, Nevada. It also looks at the possibility of diffusion of benefits in the targeted areas. Additionally, this study will compare the displacement effects (if any) and crime reduction benefits associated with disrupting two different types of drug markets (open air markets and drug houses).
