Abstract

The feasibility of constructing a dam on the East Fork of the Carson River is investigated and a design proposal is presented. Site geology, seismic hazards, economic and environmental impacts, and cost are considered. Site geology is identified using the results of previous studies and data from USDA surveys in addition to field observations. Resources made available by the USGS determine the seismic hazards, including peak ground acceleration, which affect the site. In addition to providing flood control for the Carson Valley, the increased water storage will be economically beneficial to farming and the general community in Carson Valley. The maximum water storage capacity of the proposed reservoir is estimated. Based on geologic and seismic considerations, a decked rockfill dam with a concrete face is proposed. Stability calculations for the design have been computed using Rocscience Slope 7.0. Seismic loading has been simulated and a minimum factor of safety is presented. A cost estimate for the project is presented based on previously completed projects of a similar scale.
