Abstract

Many advanced construction materials such as ultra-high performance concrete (UHPC), high strength steel rebars, and larger prestressing strands have been developed and their use is ever growing. However, ready and user-friendly software that can be used to analyze and design structural components using these materials is lacking, which makes the widespread use of these materials in construction difficult. The goal of this thesis is to fill this gap and provide a software that can help with this analysis. MC-BAM is a software that facilitates the moment-curvature analysis of beams constructed with advanced materials. The users can choose from several existing, recently developed or user-defined constitutive models for their construction materials and perform moment-curvature analysis on cross-sections of their need. The software is free and open source to provide future users with the flexibility to modify the constitutive models, add new material models, or add an entirely new functionality to suit their needs. The thesis presents the verification, implementation, and capabilities of the software. A parametric study that investigates the effect of varying the construction material in the design of beams is also presented and discussed. Overall, the implementation of new construction materials such as UHPC and high strength steel can increase the moment capacity of beams by almost 8 times, which can lead to new design opportunities for lightweight structures and long-span bridges.
