Abstract

iMedCare is a healthcare mobile app developed using React Native, which supports cross platforms; iOS and Android devices. The motivational goals are to deliver convenient healthcare services to rural and remote regions and developing countries with limited healthcare services. iMedCare contributes in reducing the burden increase in patient loads that hospitals and clinics encounter. It also lowers the overall cost and time for healthcare systems and patients. iMedCare overcomes limitations of fair design and lack of some features that might exist in some healthcare apps, which subsequently force users to use multiple apps instead of having one app that provides all the features and capabilities needed to maintain the users' health care adequately. iMedCare integrates many features that might exist across multiple apps in one app with a simple but elegant user interface with valuable and sufficient features to ensure usability and reliability. iMedCare has features such as symptom diagnosis, virtual visits, adding a medication reminder, monitoring health vitals, and receiving care in case of emergency. A user study was conducted with over 16 participants to test, evaluate, and provide feedback for iMedCare regarding its features and achievement of the motivational goals. Based on the quantitative and qualitative analyses of the user study, the results were positive; participants stated that iMedCare is useful, well designed, and of high quality. They agree that it helps deliver healthcare to remote areas, reduces cost and patient loads, and saves time. 94% of the participants in the user study reported that iMedCare meets their needs and they would be very likely to download the app and recommend it to family members and friends. This thesis provides an overview of the integration of technologies in the health sector, technical details for the technologies used in the development of iMedCare, and software specification and design of iMedCare. It also shows how iMedCare works through screenshots that explain the application’s features and capabilities. The results of the user study conducted are also presented and examined in detail. Furthermore, possible directions for future work are also included.
