Abstract
Phosphate concentration was found not to be rate limiting as had been previously thought. Continuous fermentations, using unsteady state kinetics, were run by adding fresh medium (no algae) to the culture vessel, which had been previously inoculated, and determining the specific growth rates. These fermentations showed that an increase in flow rate produced a linear increase in the specific growth rate, suggesting that some other micronutrient, one that has a direct effect on photosynthesis, is the rate limiting nutrient.
